Sony announce PS5 Firmware Beta Program and upcoming major system update, “packed with new features”

Similar to what they’ve been doing for the PS4, Sony have announced today you can now register to the PS5 OS Beta program.

If you’re accepted into the program (registering is no guarantee you’ll be accepted), this will let you download and test upcoming Firmware upgrades for the PS5 ahead of their actual release, and report any issue you find.

Beta software has usually gone through extensive QA internally, and is pretty much ready for production, with the company trying to catch last minute bugs, or, more importantly, discover if some new features are massively disliked or problematic for a large share of their audience, for a reason they couldn’t foresee.

To incite people to join the program, Sony are touting that the upcoming Firmware update, scheduled for this year, will be “packed with new features”. They do not disclose any details though (or a date, for that matter), but I’m personally hoping will get new on the “SSD expansion” feature.

Where do I register to be part of the PS5 Firmware Beta?

In order to register you must meet the requirements below:

  • You must be aged 18 years or older
  • You must be located in one of the following regions or countries: United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Germany
  • You must have a valid PSN account in good standing with a current email address
  • You must submit complete and accurate feedback to Sony Interactive Entertainment (“SIE”) about your use of the beta software in the manner and format requested by SIE

Oh, and, obviously, it works better if you actually have a PS5…

If you feel you’re good to go, head over to the PS5 Beta program site.

What features are you expecting from the next big PS5 firmware upgrade ? Tell us in the comments.
